CRES

The Centre for Research on Environmental Systems (CRES) was established as a major research arm of the Institute of Environmental and Biological Sciences when the latter was set up in 1987. The Centre was conceived as a focus of attention for the wide variety of research on different aspects of the physical and biological environment. Since its conception, the centre has been joined by the Statistics Research group from the Mathematics Department, together with the control group from the Engineering Department. Within the recently established Faculty of Science and Technology, the Centre continues to stimulate inter-disciplinary research at Lancaster University and elsewhere.

  • Department of Engineering
    • Control Research (Dr James Taylor)
System identification and control theory, with applications in robotics, transport and the environment.

  • Department of Mathematics and Statistics
    • Statistics Research
Generic methods in statistics, with a range of application areas in the environmental, medical, physical, and social sciences.

  • The Centre develops the CAPTAIN toolbox for non-stationary time series analysis and forecasting.
