Model Mix: 2 cups salt 2/3 cup water 1 cup cornflour 1/2 cup water Mix 2 cups of salt and 2/3 cup of water. Stir constantly over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, or until bubbles form. Remove from heat. Immediately mix 1 cup of cornflour and 1/2 cup of cold water with the hot mixture. Stir quickly to a stiff consistency. If it does not thicken stir over heat for 1 minute. Knead the dough until pliable and store in a tightly closed container. If exposed it will harden in 36 hours or it can be baked in an oven at 350 (Gas No. 4). It can be painted when hard. Craft Clay: Combine: 1 cup cornflour 2 cups bicarb of soda 1 1/4 cups of water Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened to dough-like consistency. Turn onto a board and knead lightly. Cover with a damp cloth until cool, then shape as desired, keeping unused portion covered with aluminium foil. When exposed to the air this clay will dry very hard and is great for making pendants (unlike lubbs which is great for meeting pedants), plaques, etc., which can then be painted and glazed. Papier Mache: 6 sheets of shredded newspaper 5 pints water 1 cup of Polycell (without fungicide) 1/3 cup Polyfilla Boil 6 sheets of shredded newspaper with 5 pints water. Beat to pulp. Strain any excess liquid off. Add 1 cup of Polycell and 1/3 cup of Polyfilla and beat well until smooth. This will keep moist for a few days in a polythene bag. Playdough Recipes (requiring no cooking): 1. 3 lbs Self-Raising flour Water (approx 1 1/4 pints) Makes stretchy dough- will not keep. 2. 1 cup salt 2 cups flour 1 cup water (approx) Children can easily make this. (Thinned down with water it makes useful fingerpaint, or paste for sticking.) 3. 3 lbs plain flour 1 lb salt 2 tbs oil Water as required This is a tough dough with a nice gleam, easily cut with pastry cutters. The oil makes it pliable. Knead well for best results. 4. 1 lb Self-Raising flour 1 lb salt Water as required Not sticky, good for modelling, can be dried hard in oven and painted. Playdough Recipes (requiring cooking): 2 cups flour 1 cup salt 2 cups water 2 tablespoons oil 2 teaspoons cream of tarter 1 dessertspoon powder paint or a few drops food colouring Cook mixture in pan over medium heat, stirring all the time to prevent sticking. Remove from heat when mixture comes away from sides of pan. Knead and store in an airtight container. Keeps very well.
