Local Environment Risk Assessment For Pesticides - LERAPS

For certain pesticides with a buffer zone requirement that are applied by horizontal boom or broadcast air-assisted sprayers, there is a legal obligation to carry out and record a LERAP if you want to reduce your aquatic buffer zone ( spraying near watercourses )

Category A Products

Products to which a Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) cannot be applied
Category A products which are subject to 5m buffer zones when used with ground crop sprayers or 1m when used with hand-held sprayers.

The suggested label wording (for the statutory box and precautions section) for Category A products subject to the restrictions is:

DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from ground crop sprayers to fall within 5 m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody, or within 1 m of the top of a ditch which is dry at the time of application. DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from hand-held sprayers to fall within 1 m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody. Direct spray away from water. THIS PRODUCT IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR BUFFER ZONE REDUCTION UNDER THE LERAP SCHEME.

Category B Products

Products to which a Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) must be applied where it is intended to reduce the size of the buffer zone used.
Category B products subject to 5m buffer zones when used with ground crop sprayers or 1m when used with hand-held sprayers. The width of buffer zones for these products may be reduced by applying a LERAP.

The suggested label wording (for the statutory box and precautions section) for Category B products subject to the restrictions is:

DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from ground crop sprayers to fall within 5m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody, unless a Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) permits a narrower buffer zone, or within 1 m of the top of a ditch which is dry at the time of application. DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from hand-held sprayers to fall within 1m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody. Direct spray away from water.

In the 'statutory' box, the following phrase must be added as an 'Other specific restriction'

This product qualifies for inclusion within the Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) scheme. A LERAP must be carried out in accordance with PSD published guidance before each spraying operation from a ground crop sprayer. The results of the LERAP must be recorded and kept available for inspection for three years.

Users should always use a product in accordance with instructions given on the approved label. If a buffer zone restriction applies it will appear on the product label.
