Looking head-on to Birling Gap, the steps coming down, the fishing boat winches on the right, and the coastguard cottages (Napoleonic) on the right at the top. You can see where they have had to repair and render the end wall of what was another pair of cottages now in the sea. The long low building is Birling Gap Hotel, only a few paces from the cliff edge. There are also a number of holiday chalets. The actual area of Birling Gap, as you can see, is soft soil and stone and is eroding far more quickly than the two jutting outcrops of chalk on eithe rside. Directly inland is East Dean.
